Extract book, ca. 1831-ca. 1872.

In 1842 Miss Walter became editor of the Boston Evening Transcript, succeeding her brother who had founded the newspaper. In 1847 she resigned, to marry William Bordman Richards. This volume, which has the appearance of an 18th century ledger, serves as a repository for manuscript articles; as a letterbook; and contains some letters received. Some items pertain to the Mount Vernon Review. Primarily, the volume contains clippings, mostly from the Transcript, of poetry, prose, and news articles of a political, religious or social nature, some possibly written by Miss Walter herself. The collection serves to illustrate the talents and tastes of a remarkable literary figure of mid-19th century Boston.
